Sister With the World

Sister Baptista

During the summer of 2007, the Holzberger family met a delightful nun while she was visiting the United States from Zambia. Sister Baptista was the first Sister from her community, Sisters of the Child Jesus, Kasama, Zambia, to ever leave Zambia in search of help outside the borders of her country to feed and care for the needy orphans of her community. Sister Baptista came to the United States seeking tender hearts that would listen to the needs of her community.

The orphans of Kasama, Zambia have seen great loss due to the HIV disease. The disease has left many of these children without parents to care for them. Some children live with a grandmother, some with a neighbor and some live on the streets. During the day these children come, what Sister Baptista calls "the day care." Here, the children receive meals and education. It is the Sisters who attend to their physical, emotional, educational and spiritual needs. The children are taught that through education and learning of a trade that they will be able to support themselves. Most importantly, however, these children are encouraged to have hope.

Tampa students can help instill a sense of hope by establishing meaningful relationships with these children. During Christmas 2007, Sister was able to photograph each child attending the Day Care. She provided our family with the photos, and we have assembled on our Find a Pen Pal! page. This unique opportunity for our Tampa students to open their hearts and reach out in love.
